Biography: Hou Xuemei was born in Zhejiang, China, on the 27th of February, 1962. She is one of the most experienced Chinese discus throwers. Hou Xumei won three gold medals and several other medals in various international events.
Hou Xuemei won her first gold medal at the 1986 Asian Games which was held in Seoul, South Korea. She managed to break the Chinese national record with a throw of 59.28m. She also bagged a gold medal at the 1989 Universaide competition which was held in Duisburg, Germany. In the 1987 Universaide held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, she secured a 3rd place finish. She took part in the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul, South Korea, and finished in 8th place. In the 1989 Barcelona World Cup, she managed to take the silver medal. Hou Xuemei managed to win another gold medal in 1990 at the Beijing Asian Games. On this occasion, she set a new Chinese record with a throw of 63.56m.
Hou Xuemei has not only won medals in international competitions, she has also dominated the discus throwing event in many local and regional competitions. She is a popular athlete in China and she has brought much honour to her country throughout her career. Hou Xumei set her personal best at 68.62 meters, achieved in Tianjin in September, 1988. But she could not break the new Chinese and Asian record of 71.68 meters set by Xiao Yanling.
